Affenpinscher Medical Conditions
by Jennie Bullock

No breed of dog is totally immune to all health disorders, but as a whole, the Affenpinscher breed comes extremely close to achieving health perfection. This may partially be due to the fact that Affenpinschers are not one of the highest ranking dogs on the popularity list. Therefore puppy mills have not been attracted to mass produce this breed.
The main health problems that you will encounter with Affenpinschers are those due to the dog's personality. The Affenpinscher is fearless, and will often times climb to places that aren't necessarily safe. They are exuberant leaping from heights, regardless of the repercussions of their landing. They are devoted, and willing to take on neighborhood dogs 10 times their size to defend their home and family. Training your dog will help you avoid some of the situations that may arise in owning an Affenpinscher. Keeping your dog on leash when going for a walk should keep it out of harms way with the neighborhood dogs and cars. Establish early guidelines as to where climbing and leaping are permitted such as in agility training or backyard games, and where these behaviors are not acceptable.
You will have to routinely clean your Affenpinscher's facial folds to avoid skin infections. Daily brushing and clearing of hair and debris from the eyes is an effective preventative of potential eye contamination.
