Airedale Terriers are for
the most part a very healthy, hardy breed of dog. Due to the efforts
of conscientious responsible breeders the problems that do exist in most
cases are minor. (That is if you have a dog from a reponsible breeder).
Airedale Terriers, as is
the case of all large dog breeds, have occurances of hip dysplasia.
When seeking a puppy be sure that both parents have OFA certification.
For more information regarding Hip Dysplasia please see: Medical
Index/Hip Dysplasia.
The second health problem
occuring in Airedale Terriers is hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is
the result of low thyroid production by the thyroid gland. Its appearance
can range from asymptomatic (without signs) to obesity, thin dull coat,
lethargy and irregular heat cycles. For more information regarding Hypothyroidism
please see: Medical Index/Hypothyroidism.
