Medical Problems in Brittanys
by
Lorraine Jones
        The Brittany dog is a genetically sound breed, with very few common, recurring problems.  A lot of credit must be given to the sportsmen, show people and breeders who have striven to keep the breed as healthy as possible.  It must be understood that there is no way that any breeder can guarantee that a dog is not going to develop a health problem sometime during its lifetime.  The best way to assure that you have a sound healthy dog is to purchase it from a reputable breeder with a quality pedigree.
        The Brittany has three weakness, but where there is a sound breeding program in place, these are not a common recurring problem. These weakness are;
Hip dysplasia
        The hip joint is a ball and socket connection.  If the joint is malformed the head of the femur will not properly align with the cup of the hip socket.  This misalignment can range from mild to severe.  In mild cases, with proper diet and exercise the animal can lead a full and active life.  In more severe cases, surgical correction or euthanasia are the only alternatives.  Your veterinarian can x-ray your dog's hips for evaluation.
Glaucoma
        Glaucoma is an eye disorder in which pressure within the eye itself increases.  If untreated, blindness will result.
Epilepsy
        Epilepsy is a hereditary seizure disorder.  This disease cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with medication. The dog with epilepsy can live a fairly normal life, but cannot be placed in the stressful situation of showing, and certainly should not be bred.

     Responsible breeders will be willing to discuss these problems with potential owners.  They will be able to provide certification from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, or Penn-Hip (pertaining to the soundness of the hips), and either a certificate from the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) or documentation from a veterinarian.  As with all dogs, breeders cannot guarantee that your dog will never grow old or will never get sick.  Reputable breeders will have a contract that will outline what you can expect from them and what your responsibilities are.  Please read these contracts carefully.
