Canaan Dog Medical Conditions
by Jennie Bullock

The Cannan Dog Club of America is very eager to keep the Canaan Dog as free as possible of medical conditions that are inherent when irresponsible breeding practices are used. They ask their members to check their dogs for hip dysplasia and to have them certified by the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) before using animals in a breeding plan. The Canaan Dog Club of America also suggest that it's members screen all their dogs for thyroid function. Every effort has been made by both the Canaan Dog Club of America and its members to keep the Canaan Dog out of puppymills which would lead to the deterioration of the gene pool.
If you are considering purchasing a Canaan Dog, be sure that both parents are OFA certified and that they have had thyroid screening. As with any purebred dog, deal only with reputable breeders.
