Characteristics:
Affenpinschers are in the hypoallergenic category, however, they do shed, sometimes profusely. They need to be "stripped" to maintain a healthy coat. The more diligent you are about keeping you Affen stripped, the less shedding you'll have to deal with. The coat should be hard and wiry; terrier-like.
Affens have an appealing "monkey-like" expression, which is most apparent when the Affen is black in color. However, other colors are acceptable such as, grey, black and tan, or red. Very light colors and white markings are a fault in the show ring.
Affens should measure 9 to 12 inches at the withers, and weigh approximately 8 to 10 pounds. The body length should approximately equal the height, giving the dog a "box-like" body type.
Temperment:
Affenpinschers are typically a quiet breed, but are also known for terrier-like "spark and fire". They exhibit a great loyalty to their family and friends, but are fearless towards any threat. They need not be babied. Affens are a medium-boned breed, and are very sturdy. Certainly not built for heavy rough-housing, but a few tumbles never stopped a determined Affen.
Whether or not an Affen gets along with children is dependent on what the dog was raised with, and possibly, if the dog has had a bad experience.
It's important with any breed of dog, to teach children to be fun loving and kind.
Some Affens will not be compatible with other pets, and it is not recommended for them to be around pet mice, rats, gerbils or hamsters, ferrets, etc. These dogs were bred to be ratters, and that heritage still burns strong.
By virtue of their stubborn terrier attitude, there are some Affens that may be difficult to housebreak.
Playtime could be extremely fun for both dog and owner. Affens display
a dexterity with their forepaws, that they are able to grapple and toss
toys (or prey). Affens also have a tendency to leap or "fly" from high
places.
