THE CHINESE CRESTED DOG
PROFILE
by Lee Weston

The Chinese Crested is a member of the Toy Group, and is a very unique looking dog.  He/she is practically hairless except for some hair at the feet, at the top of the head and at the end of the tail.  They come in a variety of colors.  There is a fully coated variety of Chinese Crested called the "Powder Puff".
The Crested has been compared to looking like a prancing pony, or a fawn, in miniature.  The head is long, and has smooth lines; the neck is gracefully arched, like a horse's and lean to the touch, and it has a broad, deep chest.  The movement of this canine is elegant, with a very nice reach and the drive off the rear legs.
It is important to stress that the Chinese Crested is not for everyone, nor for every family.  They are a small dog and cannot withstand the rough and tumble of an extremely active family.  They are gay, very agile, and they do love to play.  But they are not a "tough" breed of dog.  They do love to cuddle, and be loved, and to show love in return, particularly when they are in the mood.  The Crested will want to follow its owner everywhere.  This little dog is not one to be left alone for any length of time.
The average Crested stands approximately 11 to 13 inches tall at the withers, and weighs 9 to 12 pounds.  Interestingly, the Chinese Crested will change colors and/or markings as they mature.  A black puppy may turn silver, white or tri-colored by the time it is an adult.  This applies to the "Powder Puff" variety as well.
Another unique characteristic of the Crested is that these dogs have sweat glands, they do not pant to adjust internal body temperature when warm, they sweat.  They do need to have frequent baths to control skin problems associated with being hairless.  They are susceptible to blackheads and pimples, so a grooming routine is imperative for this breed.  Many of these dogs are allergic to wool and products that contain lanolin. Woolen products, such as, woolen sweaters, sheepskin bed liners or other woolen materials cannot be used on the Crested.  One of the difficulties with this breed is that they don't always enjoy the grooming process, as it does cramp their style.  So for the potential owner it is to the benefit of the dog to get them in the habit of the grooming process right from the time that they are puppies.  Cresteds like to control when they want to be touched - so they can be stubborn at times.
Another caution for the Chinese Crested is that bright sunlight needs to be avoided.  Being hairless, means they are susceptible to getting sunburn.  Their skin is extremely sensitive and needs careful maintenance.

Regarding the personality of the Crested, many owners have said  that they have observed their dogs acting in a very "feline" manner.  The Cresteds are very independent at times, you may want to love and hold them, but they will want to take a message and get back to you later.  The dogs do, on occasion, clean themselves like a cat will.
They are very alert, and love to run.  The Crested have been used as Therapy Dogs.  They are easy to train, if you make the process interesting, and it has a point.
If you are considering a Chinese Crested dog for yourself and/or your family, get in contact with a nearby Chinese Crested Club.  You will find some very devoted owners there, and they will love to tell you all about their novel breed.
