Profile of the Chinese Shar-Pei
by Lee Weston
-
The Chinese Shar-Pei is an alert,
intelligent, dignified breed. This breed may be aloof and snobbish
towards strangers but is devoted to his family in the extreme.
-
The dog adapts easily to city,
suburban or country life. He can be happy inside or outside.
This breed does not wander or stray like other breeds, the Shar-Pei has
an established territory and it stays at home.
-
Because the Shar-Pei's tendency
to stubbornness, early socialization and obedience training is a must.
-
Many Shar-Pei's have gained
their titles in Companion Dog (CD), Companion Dog Excellence (CDX), Utility
Dog (UD) degrees. They have proven themselves in tracking and retrieving
as well.
-
With their high degree of intelligence
it is important to keep training interesting and challenging. These
dogs will test you for consistency in your commands, as if to see if you
really know what you want or expect.
-
When raised from puppyhood with
other pets and children it is a very loving member of the family.
-
Shar-Pei's are tunnel blind,
so it's important that they are approached from the front with your hand
at nose level. Approached from any any other direction the Shar-Pei
may be startled and depending on personality, and training may react unpredictably.
Do not force your attention on a strange Shar-Pei - they are aloof, and
need time to determine whether or not to accept you.
